McFadyens Contractors carried out this project in partnership with Morrison Construction.

CS Wind UK required an upgrade of their facility at Machrihanish in order to expand their production capabilities and compete in the offshore wind market. The project primarily involved the expansion of their Surface Treatment facility to set in motion the launch of a second production line.

The project comprised civils works for both external areas and building foundations for three large building extensions as well as detailed alteration works to the floor and foundations of the three storey high surface treatment building.

The foundations work comprised the pouring of reinforced pile caps and ground beams to over 100 cast in-situ piles – including cropping the in-situ 600mm diameter concrete piles to a variety of levels with specialist 4-jaw cropper. Supply and formation of pumped 360m3 of 300mm thick reinforcement concrete floor slab with power-floated finish including perimeter structural support detail to pile caps. Formation of 2m deep reinforced concrete under slab trench and pit.

Internal alterations within existing building to form new blast room trench including removal of existing tower roller rails, break out and excavation of existing 600mm concrete slab, cropping existing concrete piles and formation of under-slab reinforced concrete trench complete with steel grating and bridging for tower roller rails. Extensive scabling and preparation works followed by a 300sqm internal replacement reinforced concrete floor with polished finish.

The extensive ground works comprised the installation of 250lin. m of Ø600mm pipe to form a new surface water attenuation system complete with flow control manholes. Excavation of existing 300mm thick external ground slab and reduction in levels to accommodate new 130lin. m of 600mm deep by 3.0m wide reinforced concrete tracks formed to accommodate recessed tower roller rails. Formation and grading of 5000sqm of the adjoining granular hardstanding; 600sqm of external Fibre-reinforced concrete was used to form external hardstandings.

The task of ensuring site safety was vital to the success of this project, especially with the client being eager to continue production operations with as little disruption as possible. Close supervision was provided, as always, by the professional service team at McFadyen’s and the project was successfully carried out to programme and budget.
